Set up monetization

Being a YouTube partner lets you to monetize videos on your channel and earn money from the revenue. Before you get started, check our YouTube Partner program overview to see if your channel is eligible and learn how to opt in.
Use the steps below to learn how to enable eligible videos and set your monetization default to earn money.

Enable your channel for monetization

To check your channel's eligibility and opt in for monetization:
  1. Sign in to your YouTube account.
  2. In the top right, select your account icon > Creator Studio. 
  3. In the left menu, select Channel > Status and features.
  4. Next to "Monetization," click Enable. You'll only see this option if your account is in good standing and hasn't been disabled for monetization.
  5. Follow the on-screen steps to accept the YouTube monetization agreement.
If your account isn't eligible for monetization, you'll see a different message. Learn what to do if monetization is disabled.

Monetize your videos

After you've opted your channel in for monetization, you can enable eligible videos to earn money from relevant ads.
  1. Make sure your video meets the video monetization criteria.
  2. Decide if you want to monetize one video or more than one video:
  3. In order to begin receiving the revenue, follow these steps to associate your YouTube and AdSense accounts.

Set your monetization default

You can set your monetization default so that every web upload is automatically monetized or not. 
  1. Sign in to your YouTube account.
  2. In the top right, select your account icon > Creator Studio. 
  3. In the left menu, select Channel > Upload defaults.
  4. Check or uncheck the box next to "Monetization."
Note: If you've only monetized one video in the past and haven't selected monetization to be off by default, your default monetization setting is On.

Copy the video from your camera to your computer. Before you upload the video to YouTube, make any edits that you would like, and then make sure that it is converted into a proper format. There are a wide variety of programs and websites that can convert video for free. YouTube accepts the following formats:

  • .3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project)
  • .MOV (QuickTime Movie)
  • .MP4 (Motion Picture Experts Group Part 14)
  • .MPEG or .MPG (Motion Picture Experts Group)
  • .FLV (Adobe Flash)
  • .M4V (h.264)
  • .WMV (Windows Media Video)
  • .WEBM (HTML5)
Log in to your account. Each account has its own channel attached to it. Sign in to the account that is associated with the channel that you want to upload the video to.
Click the Upload button on the top of the homepage. The Upload button is located to the right of the Search bar.

Choose a video file. Click the “Select files to upload” button to open a file browser. Find the file or files that you want to add. You can also drag and drop videos into the square in the web browser window.
Click the Open button. If your account is unverified, you are limited to 15 minute uploads. You can upload longer videos by verifying your account via text message. You can find the verification link in the Upload page.
  • You can upload directly from your webcam instead of uploading a pre-existing video. You can preview the recording before you upload.
  • Once you open the file, the video will begin uploading automatically. You will be taken to a page where you can enter the information for the video.
